Older generation encouraged to try something new during nine days of Silver Sunday events throughout the Sevenoaks district

Nine days of free events for older people to celebrate Silver Sunday on 6 October 2019 are being promoted by Sevenoaks District Council.

Walking rugby is just one of many experiences the older generation can try over a number of days as part of Silver Sunday.

Silver Sunday is held annually on the first Sunday of October and aims to encourage the older generation to try something new and meet new people. The District Council is fully embracing this year’s event by liaising with local community groups to publicise nearly 30 events and activities in the area.

Free activities include health walks, coffee mornings, photography lessons, walking rugby, beginners’ Tai Chi and many more. They are taking place all over the district and start on Monday, 30 September.

Cabinet Member for ‘People & Places’, Cllr Lesley Dyball, said: “The Silver Sunday is a really positive way of supporting the older community to try new things for free and meet new people by attending existing events and activities.”

“If you have an elderly relative or friend who you think would benefit from some more social interaction, encourage them to come along to a Silver Sunday event near them.”

* Silver Sunday was launched in Westminster in 2012 by The Sir Simon Milton Foundation and Lady Christabel Flight, Westminster City Council’s Older People’s Champion. The project was set up to combat the loneliness experienced by older residents in the city of Westminster and to encourage community interaction through an annual day of events. In 2013 it went national following interest from local councils, community organisations and businesses.

Last year Silver Sunday saw 1,000 events taking place reaching around 50,000 older people. For more details on listings taking place across the country, visit www.silversunday.org.uk
