Riverhead children and adults can learn how to reduce the amount of plastic they dump by attending workshops at Wildlife Reserve
RECYCLING WORKSHOP: Reduce the amount of plastic going to landfill in a fun and creative way by attending workshops at the Jeffery Harrison Visitor Centre at the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve (off Bradbourne Vale Rd TN13 3DH) on Saturday 26 January. EVERY STEP COUNTS: For anyone who feels they might benefit (or maybe knows someone who might?) the ‘Every Step Counts’ well-being walking group initiative in Riverhead offers a gentle health walking group meeting every Tuesday morning starting at 10am from outside the Costa window at Riverhead Tesco. There is also an opportunity to socialise with your fellow walkers over a cuppa afterwards. The walks are led by qualified and dedicated volunteers who will support and encourage you all the way. PORTICO GALLERY: Riverhead’s very own art gallery Portico Gallery at 25 London Rd, Riverhead TN13 2BU, which showcases original art works, hand-made jewellery and other quirky gifts, is running a sale throughout January. They are also expert picture framers. During January they are offering 50% off Christmas decorations and end-of-line stock, 20% off all art, gifts and, and 10% off bespoke framing orders. Portico also stocks unusual greetings cards and is open from 10am and to 5pm Tuesday to Saturday.
PARISH COUNCIL MEETING: Riverhead Parish Council’s first monthly meeting of 2019 is on Monday 21 January at 7.30pm in the committee room at Riverhead Village Hall. Riverhead residents are always welcome to attend these meetings to observe. But if there is a local matter that you would like to raise at this meeting, do contact the council beforehand on 01732 461278 or at clerk@riverheadparishcouncil.org.uk or via the website below so they can give you an informed response at the meeting. The agenda is posted about a week beforehand on the village noticeboards and also on the council website at www.riverheadpc.kentparishes.gov.uk as are those for meetings of the planning committee. The Parish Clerk has an office (open Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm) at the Village Hall and phone messages and emails are picked up regularly at other times.

THE PARISH COUNCIL’S ROLE: The much-admired Christmas lights and many other good things in Riverhead, including the year-round colourful plant troughs and baskets, the village litter-picking and weeding parties and the Parkland working parties are all organised by Riverhead Parish Council and very largely provided by its (volunteer and unpaid) Councillors. Riverhead Parish Council is a completely separate entity from the Parochial Church Council of St Mary’s Church (Riverhead and Dunton Green) though both bodies are often in touch and collaborate on events such as the successful recent Armistice Day Centenary commemorations.
Riverhead Parish Council (RPC) represents the civil parish of Riverhead and is the most local rung of local government (ie below Sevenoaks District Council). As such RPC is funded by a small precept from Council Tax. RPC has an important consultative role in local planning decisions and also has constant interaction with Kent Highways on local street matters including streetlights, blocked gullies, parking, road-markings and pot holes. RPC also owns and runs the Village Hall, the Riverhead Parkland, two large areas of allotments, the 3rd Sevenoaks Scout Group site and various other small open spaces.
