Knitted teddies go on patrol with the police to help comfort children in distress

KNITTING groups within the Sevenoaks district have donated almost 100 teddy bears which will be used by police officers to comfort children in distress.

Patrols will carry Bobby Buddies in their vehicles and give them to young people who may be experiencing a traumatic event, such as being involved in a road traffic collision.

The idea originally came from an initiative started by Dorset Police and it is hoped it will now benefit officers and children in and near the Sevenoaks area.

Sevenoaks Inspector Nick Finnis said: “We have had tremendous support from volunteers including the Westerham Knit ‘n’ Natter group, Shoreham Women’s Institute and from Otford Parish Council.

“Officers often encounter young children experiencing distress; sometimes it can be as a result of a domestic disturbance, or it could be someone close to them has been a victim of a crime. The Bobby Buddy simply acts as a distraction and also hopefully offers reassurance to young children to reduce any fears and anxiety they may have.”

Inspector Finnis added: “We have had an amazing response so far, from people who want to help and would be delighted for help from others who may wish to also participate.”
