PolyChor celebrates Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year with concert in St Martin’s Church, Eynsford

The locally based PolyChor choir is uniting with the Southwark Sinfonietta to present, in Beethoven’s 250th anniversary year, two of his compositions, the Mass in C, and Symphony No 5 in C minor.

The performance, which is being conducted by Rupert Bond, will take place at St Martin’s Church in Eynsford on Saturday 4 April starting at 7.30pm. Tickets are £10 (under 18s free) and are available from Normans Butchers in High Street Eynsford and Wadard Books in Farningham High Street. Alternatively, you can buy tickets on the door or order them in advance by emailing: polychormus@gmail.com

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) created an extraordinary output of beautiful music, reaching the outer limits of human brilliance. His personal life was tragic – unlucky in love, he was hampered by his commoner status, and also by his short temper, constant feuding, dishevelled appearance and outspokenness.

Later in life he endured a fearful struggle against deafness. Courage and creative need kept him from total despair, and some of his greatest works were composed during the last 10 years of his life, when he was quite unable to hear.

It has been said that his music glows with radiant humanity, that he was about love, joy and celebrating the essence of what it is to be human and that “We need Beethoven now. His music reminds us that we have hope, and that obstacles, however immense and crushing they may seem, can be overcome”.

AXSTANES PANTO: This year saw Alice tumble headlong through the long windswept tunnel of the White Rabbit into the glorious Wonderland of the rival Queens of Hearts and of Spades. The audiences were enterained by fantastic costumes, zany behaviour and absurd reversals of everyday expectations that had even the youngest in the audience transfixed with delight and totally engaged. Great fun was had by all, thanks to the excellent work of the cast and production team.
