Sevenoaks and surrounding villages commemorate the end of The Great War
IT is 100 years since the end of World War One (1914 – 1918) and preparations are already underway in and around Sevenoaks to commemorate this anniversary.
Sevenoaks Town Council is commemorating WW1 through a variety of projects including:
WW1 Poppy Letterbox
The Poppy Letterbox is located in the Stag Foyer of the theatre in London Road. Young people are being encouraged to write a letter to someone who served in WW1 and describe how their contribution has benefited young people today. Finished letters are to be delivered to the letterbox up until November. Entry forms can be found at local schools, at the Café on the Vine and in The Stag.
Replica Welcome Home Archway
An archway was constructed in London Road, Sevenoaks, to welcome WW1 soldiers home at the end of the conflict. A smaller scale replica is currently located at the Vine Gardens. It has been decorated with knitted poppies kindly donated by the public and adorned with flags.
Local historian and genealogist Matthew Ball has written a fascinating insight for My Sevenoaks Community into what life was like at Knole House during WWI. The house itself was used as a convalescent hospital and the grounds were used for training. Members of the staff had to go and fight for their country – and many did not return. Otford also has its own commemoration in the form of specially made ring of poppies around the village pond. Each poppy represents a resident killed during the conflict. See the story by clicking here.
If your village is planning any special events to commemorate 100 years since the end of World War One email details to My Sevenoaks Community at editor@mysevenoakscommunity.com so we can include it in future coverage of this event.
