Beyond the Tricks: The Story of our Local Magician

Sevenoaks is a town and community that we truly believe has everything. So, it’ll come as no surprise to tell you we have a world-class magician in our midst, Bob Pound.

In fact, you’re probably already familiar with Bob’s work without even realising it. You see, as well as live performances, Bob has also been quietly making his mark behind-the-scenes on popular TV shows.

More on that shortly, but first, why are we so fascinated with magic in the first place?

As children, we believed that the world was full of mysteries and wonder. And it’s that childlike wonder, curiosity and suspension of disbelief that draws us to the art of ‘magic’. The allure of magic is timeless, ancient and has the unique power of cutting across cultural and generational lines to unite people in shared moments of awe and delight.

From grand illusions performed on stage to intimate close-up magic, magician Bob Pound has mastered his craft over 30 years. As we delve into his story, we are reminded that the magic we see is just the tip of the iceberg, with countless hours of practice, creativity, and passion lying beneath the surface.

The makings of a magician

Bob grew up in Sevenoaks but it wasn’t an easy time for him, having been diagnosed with dyslexia at the tender age of 7-years-old. At 11-years-old, Bob was still unable to read or write proficiently and struggled through a school system that was ill-equipped to support his needs.

A poignant memory that has stayed with Bob throughout his life is when a teacher cruelly told him that that he would never amount to anything. This statement is as false as it is shocking.

Because Bob has indeed made something of himself. He is a beloved husband, father, and community member, and his sharp talent as a magician and natural gift for making people smile brings joy and laughter to thousands of people every year.

Not to mention he has TV production companies lining up to work with him and regularly consults for some of the greatest magicians of our time. He’s been going viral on social media lately too, with an Instagram video hitting over 1 million views and second video close behind.

How did 11-year-old Bob endure? “I tried really hard and at the end of every day, when I put my head on my pillow, I knew I had been the best version of myself.”

From humble beginnings in a magic shop to TV superstardom

Bob went on to West Kent College to gain a BTEC in performing arts and backstage production. In performance and entertainment, Bob found his confidence, but the technical element of backstage production would add a valuable string to his bow.

He also landed himself a job at Davenports Magic Shop in London – often described as a ‘magicians’ mecca.’

As a brave 16-year-old, Bob did his first live gig and the rest, as they say, is history.

Bob was booked to do a university gig alongside another up-and-coming magician. That magician was a young man named Steven Frayne, but you might know him as Dynamo. The pair hit it off right away, started swapping tricks, helping each other to navigate the industry and, most importantly, developed a close friendship that’s as strong now as it’s ever been.

Bob Pound has since worked on seven television shows with Dynamo. Most recently was the much-anticipated Dynamo is Dead, which aired on Sky in December 2023. The show featured celebrities such as Tyson Fury, Cara Delevingne, Steven Bartlett, Kate Beckinsdale, Pete Davidson, Demi Lovato, Tony Hawk and more!

A labour of love

The skill, dexterity, and sleight of hand required to perform trick after trick—each defying the laws of nature—are no small feats. These abilities aren’t learnt overnight.

Behind each spellbound moment lies years of dedication, problem-solving, and relentless practice. Bob discloses that a single trick can take around two full years to master! There have been times when Bob has locked himself away for seven hours a day to refine and finesse.

Luckily, he has the support of his wonderful wife, Tracey, who encourages him to keep practicing and is a more-than-willing test subject.

When you move into the realms of TV, the whole game changes.

Bob has turned down multiple opportunities to become a TV personality himself, favouring live TV performances instead. His behind-the-scenes role as a ‘Magic Consultant’—arguably the coolest title ever—suits him down to a tee.

World famous magician David Blaine hailed Bob as a ‘genius’ and others on the TV circuit have dubbed him as the ‘Swiss army knife of magic!’

What’s coming next for Bob Pound Magician?

Our local magician is putting his story onto paper and writing his first book.

The book promises to give us mere mortals a glimpse into the world of magic. Diving into magic as a profession, the differences between real world magic and TV magic, turning ideas into reality and LOTS of inside information about the industry.

Of course, it will be peppered with Bob’s own fascinating anecdotes – of which there are plenty from his 30 years in the industry.

Given his ongoing battle with dyslexia, Bob feels like this could be his biggest achievement to date and we cannot wait to read it!
