Sevenoaks Hockey Club turn pink to show their support for breast cancer
Sevenoaks Hockey Club recently took part in Pink Week by raising some much needed awareness for breast cancer by supporting the new fundraising group, Charity Angels UK, co-founded by local resident Steph Harrison. The fun-filled annual event aims to highlight the persistent battle faced by thousands of individuals each year. With one women diagnosed with breast cancer every 10 minutes, and around 46,000 people diagnosed every year in England, Pink Week is one that resonates deeply with many people.
An individual who has close ties to this cause is Michele Harvey from Sevenoaks Hockey club. Her own diagnosis with breast cancer in 2017 has since amplified her desire to express the importance of sharing knowledge and talking about the illness, in order to prevent and ease the suffering of others who may not take note of their symptoms and consequently risk late diagnosis.
Serving as a fine example of someone who has fought the battle and is now thriving on the other side, Michele embodies an inspirational role model to many in the Sevenoaks community. Her positivity and vitality is infectious, offering a ray of hope to many that there is a wholesome life to be lived beyond diagnosis.
Such vibrancy and optimism was reflected throughout the club over the two days of fundraising, with attire such as pink socks and accessories being worn by club members, a pink themed raffle hosted in the evening, an indulgent cake sale held on the Sunday, and a competition to ‘Guess how many Percy Pigs in a jar’, resulted in the club raising an impressive £1040. These funds will be used to support smaller nationwide breast cancer charities, with Against Breast Cancer and the Bob Potter Trust being this year’s beneficiaries.

Having facilitated this year’s funding, both Michele and her friend Pia Tucker (Pia and Pecka as they are fondly known) have demonstrated how the club’s unique family bond can serve as a pivotal platform to many in the Sevenoaks community. This concept of coming together and showing solidarity and support in aid of such a worthy cause, is one that Michele and Pia hope many other sports clubs in Sevenoaks can also adopt.
