Sleep under the stars in a luxury treehouse surrounded by the Wilder Kaiser mountains of Austria
A dream come true awaits you in the Wilder Kaiser mountains of Austria, where luxury meets nature in the most romantic setting of a unique treehouse in the centre of Ellmau in the Tirol.
It is built around a 50-year-old pine tree in the award-winning garden of the 4* Hotel Hochfilzer in Ellmau and this is its first summer since construction.
It is the personal dream come true for hotelier Ingrid Hochfilzer and her artist brother Andreas Feigl. Ingrid said: “Since our wonderful childhood very close to nature, we wanted to build a treehouse that is more than a children’s playground in the trees.
“It is such a pretty treehouse with wood panelling and alpine plants on the roof and all around the house. My brother designed the hanging baskets which encourage our guests to spend some tranquil time underneath the tree in a quiet, shady spot overlooking the organic swimming pond and listening to its little waterfall.”
The tree – a local Föhre pine tree with long needles – is in Flora’s Garden, taken from Ingrid’s middle name. She has developed the garden over several decades as an organic herb garden, winning her the Austrian Natur im Garten award.
The treehouse cost around €400,000 to construct, with local tradespeople being chosen to do the work. It has a large bedroom, luxury bathroom, living room with extra bed, kitchen and terrace and is ideal for up to four people. On hot summer nights, the main double bed can be rolled out onto the terrace for a romantic night under the stars. Guests can use facilities at the hotel and adjacent Alpenpension Claudia and also have the option to have breakfast and dinner there.

The treehouse and its neighbour of Alpenpension Claudia are the little sisters of the Hotel Hochfilzer, which is well established and popular amongst visitors for its good food, family atmosphere and wellness facilities. Its central location is convenient for ski lifts and so offers ski in/ski out in the winter season.
