Make a note in your diary for this year’s Riverhead Carnival – Sunday 15 September
RIVERHEAD CARNIVAL: The biggest Riverhead community event of the year will take place on the afternoon of Sunday 15 September on Chipstead Common so make a date in your diary now. The 3rd Sevenoaks Scout Group, which organises the event, is again looking for support from any local organisations, charities or businesses that would like to take part by running a stall or maybe sponsoring something. This is always a great afternoon out for all as well as raising funds for local charities as well as the local Scout Group.
The Carnival includes the popular Dog Show when members of the public can enter their family pet. Any dog can enter with fun classes such as best trick and waggiest tail etc. There are fabulous prizes and generous goodie bags kindly donated by Sevenoaks Animal Feeds.
Anyone considering running a stall should contact Andrew Holland at firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible to reserve a pitch.
SCOUT NEWS: All sections of the 3rd Sevenoaks (Riverhead and Dunton Green) Scout Group are thriving, with 20 Beavers, 70 Cubs, 90 Scouts and 25 Explorer Scouts. However, many more youngsters are keen to join, so the Group needs more adults to come forward to help them offer more girls and boys the chance to get involved. No experience necessary. Anyone interested in learning more should contact Chris McCann at: email@example.com
HOLIDAY WILDLIFE FUN: On Friday mornings 2, 9 and 16 August at Jeffery Harrison Visitor Centre at the Sevenoaks Wildlife Reserve there will be Nature Explorer sessions for children aged 2-8 featuring Forest School based activities. A wonderful opportunity for families to have fun together, whilst exploring the beautiful woodland reserve and trying a variety of bush craft and arty activities. To book (essential) and for more information about these and other events see www.kentwildlifetrust.org.uk/events
The reserve with its walks around the lakes is open to everyone every day, dawn until dusk and the Visitor Centre is open every day 10am – 5pm. Ample parking. NB No dogs allowed except assistance dogs, because of the wildlife.
THE WILDLIFE RESERVE off Bradbourne Vale Road has walks around the lakes. It is free to enter and is open every day, dawn until dusk. The Visitor Centre is open every day in summer from 10am – 5pm. There is ample parking but please note that dogs are allowed except assistance dogs, because of the wildlife.
RIVERHEAD PARKLAND: The Parish Council hopes that Parkland users will avoid letting their children and dogs investigate the area of silt recently dredged from the stream. It could result in them getting very dirty as although the surface is drying out, there could still be wet sludge underneath.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The next Riverhead Parkland Working Party will be held on Wednesday 14 August from 9.30 -11.30am when the regular volunteer group of Riverhead Parish Councillors and local residents would welcome you to join them. Residents are very fortunate to have this beautiful area in the centre of the village, but more helpers are now needed to keep it looking good. Tools and refreshments are provided but do dress appropriately, including sturdy footwear and gardening gloves. The work is not arduous, and you will enjoy plenty of fresh air and good company. The group meets at the entrance to the Parkland off St Mary’s Drive at 9.30am. Just turn up or take a stroll through the Parkland that morning to see what goes on. More information on the Parish Council website (contact details below).
ALLOTMENTS AVAILABLE: Riverhead Parish Council owns two sites of around 20 allotments each. Macartney Allotment Garden is situated at the end of Orchard Road and Broadmead Allotment Garden between Heathfield Road and Hawthorn Lane off Bradbourne Vale Road. Both sites benefit from tap water. One allotment has recently become available on each site. A good opportunity to prepare the ground before the autumn. You can find more information on the Parish Council website . Anyone interested in taking up an allotment (the cost is very low) should contact the Parish Clerk – all contact details can be found below.
RIVERHEAD PARISH COUNCIL The Parish Council will not be meeting in August so the next monthly meeting will be on September 16. In the meantime the Parish Clerk’s office at the village hall is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 9.30am to 12.30pm and phone messages and emails are picked up regularly at other times. The village hall and the committee room are available to hire for meetings and parties.
